Melbourne Cup History Against Caulfield Graduates

The top two in 2015 Melbourne Cup betting for Tuesday’s great race at Flemington Racecourse are both Caulfield Cup graduates with history going against them for a win in the ‘race that stops a nation’.

There are 24 starters in the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) over the two miles for Flemington Race 7 at 3:00pm (AEST) tomorrow afternoon, with betting led by Fame Game and Trip To Paris.

The duo are two of the 11 international Melbourne Cup horses in the mix this season and are also the only two single figure hopes in the latest Melbourne Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au – home of the Melbourne Cup Giveaway where punters can win a brand new 2015 Ford 4×4 Ranger simply by having a punt on the world’s richest handicap!

Japan’s Fame Game is sitting top of the odds at $4 and jumps from barrier 12 with Zac Purton in the saddle

Purton was aboard the Heart’s Cry six-year-old for his fast-finishing sixth on debut down under behind Mongolian Khan in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 17.

There was plenty of merit in Fame Game’s brave Caulfield Cup performance after he was caught up without a clear run until inside the final 150m over a distance short of his preferred.

The Yoshitada Munakata-trained galloper is a Group 3 winner over 3400m back home and was runner-up in Japan’s prestigious two mile classic, the Group 1 Tenno Sho (3200m), behind Gold Ship earlier this year.

Along with his big 57kg however, an exact weight no Melbourne Cup winner has on their back in over 30 years, the Caulfield Cup form line also works against this year’s Melbourne Cup favourite.

No Melbourne Cup winner has come straight out of a Caulfield Cup run without another start since Japan won their first and to date only ‘Loving Trophy’ with Delta Blues (2006).

He was third in the Caulfield Cup nine years ago paying a juicy 80/1 before an upset in the Melbourne cup at 16/1 defeating stablemate Pop Rock narrowly.

Before Delta Blues the Caulfield Cup produced six Melbourne Cup winners straight out of the mile and a half lead-up between 1995 and 2003, three completing the coveted Spring Cups double back-to-back.

Of those six, just one finished worse than fourth in the Caulfield Cup when in 1998 Jezabeel was sixth in the lead-up before saluting for the Melbourne Cup putners next start with Chris Munce in the saddle with a 51kg light weight.

Fame Game then has a hoodoo to overcome to come off an unplaced Caulfield Cup run straight into the world’s richest handicap this week.

Runner-up in the Caulfield Cup was the Ed Dunlop-trained British raider Trip To Paris who is now at a quote of $8.50 in the latest Melbourne Cup betting markets to go one better in his second run down under.

Newmarket’s Dunlop is best known for his trio of Melbourne Cup seconds with veteran stayer Red Cadeaux, back for a fifth shot at the classic this season paying $26 to finally breakthrough with a victory for connections and his many fans.

Stablemate Trip To Paris meanwhile jumps from barrier 14 on Tuesday, which last produced a Melbourne Cup winner when Makybe Diva carried an incredible 58kg to victory for her third win 10 years ago.

He gets into the race on the same 55kg as Red Cadeaux and if successful joins Makybe Diva from 2004 for her second when she backed straight up from a Caulfield Cup second to win.

Other 2015 Melbourne Cup horses coming out of the Caulfield edition without another run include third-placed German import Our Ivanhowe ($21) out wide in gate 22 of 24 and fifth past the post Snow Sky who is Tuesday’s 58kg Melbourne Cup top weight.
